ART IN TIMES OF WAR II

The international scene is suffering from two major conflicts that are affecting the physical and moral integrity of citizens. The Ukrainian and Palestinians instead of falling apart have raised their voices and have used art to go against the conflict, using art as a way of resistance.

(This week the publication will be focused on Palestina. Last week was about Ukrainian art in times of war.)

PALESTINIAN ART IN TIMES OF WAR

With the war in Gaza, lots of Palestinian artists are using their artworks as a way to demand freedom, justice and the end of the conflict. That way, Palestinian artists are finding their way to connect with the worldwide population sharing the devastating situation they are experiencing. Moreover, they use it as well a way to reaffirm their national identity and culture.

One example of using art as a way of resistance is the Palestinian artist Rana Samara:

Rana Samara is curious and not conventional artist, that's why she has achieve more relevance, and her message has become more powerful. When she was interview, she said: "In times of stress, usually people go for black, people go for dark colors...I found that now, my stress has come out with very, very, very bright colors." That is what makes the difference with her artworks and the traditional way in which dramatic situations have been represented in art.

Samara is part of a group of Palestinian artists that joined forces with the Zawyeh Gallery in Ramallah with the goal of creating work to get money for humanitarian aid in Gaza. When she was asked about why she does that she said:"What caught my mind and heart in what I was watching about this war was the issue of children. And so I looked and I concentrated on what each child was carrying".

In addition, lots of Israeli artists have expressed through their artworks this same felling, and demanding the end of the war. Addam Yekutieli is a multidisciplinary artists that said: "I've always dealt with kind of like political or social themes, but for a very long time, they were much more metaphorical than they are now...I haven't really made any art since October 7," he said in November. "I've been mainly writing since then."

After investigating these, and other, cases of Palestinian artists, it is clear that the civilians from both sides (Israelis and Palestinians) are the ones that are paying the consequences of the war. Furthermore, they are fighting not even for their interest, they are fighting for political interests of the ones in power. That is when art acts as a way of resistance.
